Red cloth, a bit coarser than the cloth of the first state; with ornate green and white stamped decorations, and black lettering on the spine and front cover where the first state had gilt. Top edge trimmed but plain, not gilt as the first state. Otherwise untrimmed. Spine: CHIVALRY | CABELL | Harpers ("Harpers" on the spine is in italic, with a capital H and the rest in lower case, where the first state had “HARPERS” in all capitals in an upright serifed typeface.) Color plate by Howard Pyle with tissue-guard, subscribed ‘I sing of death’ (see image above).
Dedication:
To | Anne Branch Cabell| [device] | “ainsi à vous, madame, à ma très haulte et | très noble dame, à qui j’ayme à devoir | attachment et obéissance, | j’envoye ce livret.” | [device] (see image above).
Endpapers:
Rose and white variegated paper (see image above).
Dust jacket:
The decorated box of the first state does not seem to have been provided for the second or later states. The second state probably was issued with a plain (or minimally printed) paper wrapper, as were the later states of The Line of Love, but we have not seen any surviving examples.
Notes:
The frontispiece and eight of the color plates are by Howard Pyle; two are by William Hurd Lawrence; and one is by Elizabeth Shippen Green.
