This photograph of James Branch Cabell was published in The Bookman, September, 1913, accompanying an uncredited article titled "The Imaginary Nicolas". Cabell attributed some of his short stories, as well as the then recently published The Soul of Melicent (spelled "Millicent" in the article!) to his imaginary author Nicolas de Caen. This article recounts the story of how the worthies of Caen, anxious to commemorate their illustrious son, started a fund in his honor.
