Binding:

This binding variant has not, to our knowledge, been reported previously. Hall describes only a single binding for this printing: green cloth, cover blank, gilt lettering on spine. While both bindings we have seen for this printing would match that description, they differ in color (D13 in dark olive vs. *D13a in light lime green) and the grain and texture of the cloth (the cloth used for D13 is a tightly woven basket-weave, while that used for *D13a is a much looser plain weave) (see images above).

As Hall has reported, John Lanes' records are far from complete, and previously unrecorded binding variants turn up fairly often. The fact that both bindings are in shades of green probably helps explain why this particular variation has gone unnoticed. We found it not by clever detective work, but only because we happened to have these two copies side-by-side.

It must be noted that we have no idea which of these variants Hall had in mind when he designated it Jur-D13, nor do we have any way to determine precedence between them.

The jacket statement that this is the "16th large impression" counts the thirteen unillustrated Lane printings, the 1921 illustrated edition, and the two Penguin Press editions (see image above).
