"Books within books." Like his fellow fantasy author Arthur Machen, Mr. Cabell made masterful use of this literary method of buttressing his stories with historical and literary references that are not to be located in mundane libraries. In this book, Mr. Klinefelter has taken the logical next step of producing a bibliography of these special volumes. This work is a delight for the Cabell aficionado, but probably has limited appeal for others.

lewistamIn keeping with the spirit of Mr. Klinefelter's work, The Silver Stallion has added a reproduction of the title page of John Frederick Lewistam's Popular Tales of Poictesme, London, 1855, (see p. 12 of Books About Poictesme) as described in the text printed on Mr. Cabell's Map of Poictesme, *G13. Of course, the only known copy of this work resides in the library of John Charteris in Lichfield.
