This edition, one of the first titles published in the Bellantine Adult Fantasy series, was the one that really introduced this book, and Eddison's works in general, to the rapidly developing fantasy readership of the 1960s. It includes not only Keith Henderson's illustrations and decorations from the 1922 first printing, Worm-A1, but also both James Stephen's introduction from the 1926 first American edition, Worm-B1 (A), and Orville Prescott's introduction from the 1952 second American printing, Worm-C1 (A).

This is the first Canadian Ballantine printing.

According to Eddison's bibliography on the ISFDB, Ballantine reprinted this title thirteen times in the US between 1967 and 1976, along with two Canadian printings and a further three printings by Del Ray/Ballantine 1977-81. In addition, Pan Ballantine did three English printings between 1972 and 1975.
