DISCUSSION

Full Title:

A Fish Dinner in Memison

Publication:

New York, E.P. Dutton & Co., 1941

Binding:

Crown octavo; 8¾ in. x 6¼ in.; red cloth; gilt text on black ground on spine, gilt decorations on front cover; top edges trimmed and stained red, otherwise untrimmed. Spine: [on a black printed field] [row of ten small stars in blind] | A | FISH DINNER | IN | MEMISON | by | E.R. | EDDISON | [row of ten small stars in blind] | [below field, base of spine in gilt] DUTTON (see image above).

This binding is a very close match (in style, not color) to both the first English printing and the first binding state of the first American printing of Mistress of Mistresses, Mis-A1 and Mis-B1 (A).

Notes:

According to Paul Edmund Thomas's introduction to the first (stand-alone) edition of The Mezentian Gate to include the recently discovered additional material, Mez-C1 (w), Faber & Faber were unable to print a first edition in England due to the war-time paper shortage. Because of that, this Dutton printing is the true first.
