DISCUSSION

Full Title:

Mistress of Mistresses: A Vision of Zimiamvia

Publication:

London, Faber & Faber Limited, January, 1935.

Binding:

Crown octavo; 8½ in. x 5¾ in.; blue cloth; gilt text on red ground on spine, gilt decoration on front cover; top edge trimmed and stained purple, otherwise untrimmed. Spine: [on a red printed field] [row of ten small stars in blind] | MISTRESS | OF | MISTRESSES | by | E.R. | EDDISON | [row of ten small stars in blind] | [below field, base of spine in gilt] FABER AND | FABER.

The binding at left is from a copy as issued. The binding at right is from The Athenæum's presentation copy, and carries a gilt stamping of the Club's emblem at the bottom of the spine, just above the publisher's name (see images above).

Notes:

Shown here is a presentation copy in the regular binding, inscribed by Eddison to his London Club, The Athenæum, with the club's bookplate and various stampings, including a proper deaccession stamp - it wasn't stolen!

The binding is a close match in design to the first binding of the American first edition, Mis-B1 (A). The first printing of A Fish Dinner in Memison, Mem-A1 (A), is also in a very similar binding.

Twelve copies were issued for presentation. I have not seen one of these, but they are reported to be printed on special paper and bound in vellum.
