DISCUSSION

Full Title:

Mistress of Mistresses: A Vision of Zimiamvia

Publication:

New York, E.P. Dutton & Co., 1935

Binding:

Mis-B1: Crown octavo; 8¾ in. x 6 in.; blue cloth; gilt text on red ground on spine, gilt decoration on front cover; top edges trimmed and stained red, otherwise untrimmed. Spine: [on a red printed field] [row of ten small stars in blind] | MISTRESS | OF | MISTRESSES | by | E.R. | EDDISON | [row of ten small stars in blind] | [below field, base of spine in gilt] DUTTON (see image above).

Mis-B1a: Crown octavo; 8½ in. x 6 in.; brown textured paper boards; red-brown text on spine, red-brown decoration on front cover; all edges trimmed. Spine: MISTRESS | OF | MISTRESSES | by | E.R. | EDDISON | DUTTON (see image above).

The primary binding in blue cloth, Mis-B1 (A), closely matches the binding used by Faber for the English first edition, Mis-A1, and is also a match in style, although not in color, for the binding that Dutton used later for A Fish Dinner In Memison, Mem-A1.

The second binding, Mis-B1 (A), is obviously of lesser quality: it's slightly shorter because all edges are now trimmed, the tops are unstained, textured paper has replaced the cloth, the gilt has gone, replaced by red-brown ink, and the printed spine label has gone as well.

Notes:

All of the copies I have seen in the blue cloth binding have faded badly.
